A man and child died during a head-on crash in Bellair, Durban on Friday.

A head-on collision on Friday morning claimed the lives of a child and man in his 30s in Bellair, Durban.

ALS Paramedics said the crash happened around 09:45 on the N2 northbound, on the Edwin Swales Bridge.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, who described the accident as “total carnage”, said one vehicle overturned after colliding head-on with another vehicle.

He said:

Paramedics assessed both vehicles and found that two occupants in one vehicle were severely trapped in the vehicle. With the help of the Netcare911 Rescue unit, the patients were cut free and assessed by medics.

“A male believed to be in his 30s and a small baby were found to have sustained severe injuries. Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do for them, and they were declared deceased at the scene,” he said.

Advanced Life Support paramedics treated the driver and passenger of the second vehicle before transporting them to a hospital for further medical assessment and treatment.

“Witnesses allege that one vehicle, which was travelling southbound, came across and collided head-on with the second vehicle. However, SAPS and Metro Police were in attendance and will be investigating further,” said Jamieson.
