It’s fine with hot to very hot temperatures in some places of SA for New Year’s Day, isolated to scattered thundershowers in other areas of the country.

The forecast for New Year’s Day is a mixed bag of fine and hot to very hot temperatures in some places in South Africa.

Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated to scattered thundershowers in other areas of the country, according to the South African Weather Service.

Impact-based warnings

A Yellow Level 4 warning has been issued for disruptive rain leading to flooding of roads, low-lying bridges, and formal/informal settlements in places along the coast and adjacent interior between Port St Johns and Richards Bay.

A Yellow Level 2 warning for disruptive rain leading to flooding of roads, low-lying bridges and formal/informal settlements is expected over the central interior of KwaZulu-Natal and along the Eastern Cape coast between Port Alfred and Mbizana.

Gauteng will be partly cloudy with warm temperatures and isolated thundershowers.

The expected UVB sunburn index is high.

Morning fog along the escarpment is forecast for Mpumalanga, otherwise it will be cloudy and warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers.

Limpopo will be partly cloudy with warm to hot temperatures and isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, except in the south-west of the province.

It will become cloudy in the east in the evening.

Fine and warm to hot conditions are forecast for the North West, becoming partly cloudy with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers, except in places in the extreme north and north-western parts of the province.

The Free State will be cloudy in the east and along the Lesotho border, otherwise it will be partly cloudy and warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the extreme east of the province.

Morning fog patches over the extreme north-west are expected in the Northern Cape, otherwise fine and warm to hot conditions but very hot temperatures are expected in places over the interior.

It will be cloudy to partly cloudy in the southern interior with isolated showers in the south-east and north-east.

The wind along the coast will be a light variable, becoming moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly in Kleinsee from the afternoon.

The Western Cape will have fine and hot to very hot temperatures in the west, otherwise it will be cloudy and cool to warm with rain and isolated showers but scattered along the eastern parts of the south coast.

The wind along the coast will be light and variable along the west coast until the afternoon, otherwise fresh to strong southerly to south-easterly.

The expected UVB sunburn index is extreme.

Cloudy and cool with scattered showers and rain are forecast for the western half of the Eastern Cape but isolated in the north of the province.

The wind along the coast will be a moderate to fresh south-easterly, becoming easterly by late afternoon.

The eastern half of the province is expected to be cloudy with cool temperatures and isolated to scattered showers and rain, but widespread along the coast.

Thundershowers may be possible along the Wild Coast.

The wind along the coast will be light and variable, becoming moderate to fresh easterly in the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal is expected to be cloudy with cool to warm conditions.

Widespread showers and thundershowers are expected in the province’s east, otherwise scattered throughout.

The wind along the coast will be a moderate south-easterly in the north, otherwise moderate to fresh easterly.

The expected UVB sunburn index is low.
