On New Year’s Day, one person died in a head-on collision on the R74 in Stanger, KwaZulu-Natal.

Collisions over the long weekend this New Year have driven up the festive season road accident death toll, with the Eastern Cape now topping more than 100 deaths.

Before Christmas, Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga said 719 road deaths had been recorded in the first three weeks of the 2023/24 festive season. She is yet to provide the latest death toll.

However, the New Year weekend was marred by several road accidents across the country.
