It serves as little comfort to the South African cricket public that Heinrich Klaasen – who has just joined the rising vogue in stepping down from the five-day arena – would have been an appealing contender for at least the next two Proteas Test tours.

The men’s national side are due to face West Indies away at the back end of the domestic winter and then soon afterwards travel to Bangladesh, also for two Tests on enemy terrain.

Common denominator? The likelihood of some sluggish, often spin-friendly surfaces that would have made Klaasen’s increasing batting authority against slow fare – he has a confident ability to play the turning ball late – a valuable attribute in the SA ranks.
