After 30 years of democracy, South Africa has achieved a lot.

By enumerating the successes of the past 30 years, Oscar van Heerden writes that we can confidently say, as South Africa, we have turned a corner from the heyday of apartheid.

It seems rather clever of the ANC to focus our attention on the last 30 years of democratic rule in the run-up to this year’s elections rather than the past five years of the Ramaphosa administration. After all, half of the last five years were taken up by Covid-19 and the skilful management thereof.
