South African wine and food commentator Michael Olivier’s last post on 29 December 2023, the night of his death, was on Spier’s Cap Classique Brut 2021 made by Heidi Dietstein, Spier’s Cap Classique winemaker.

Of the wine, Michael, in his trademark style, wrote in detail of the production process, labelling it a “smasher”, not just a celebratory wine, but a refreshing everyday wine to be paired with seafood and a “salady summer lunch”, perfect for the Cape’s festive heydays and holidays.
