The Democratic Alliance in OR Tambo District Municipality, along with other opposition parties, has strongly condemned an overseas trip to be led by Executive Mayor Nomakhosazana Meth, and Deputy Executive Mayor, Robert Nogumla, paid for by the taxpayers.
In the council meeting held on the 1 September 2017, all opposition parties voted against the planned trip on the basis that it would lead to further unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure.
The total cost of the trip to Argentina from 22 – 29 September is R391 982 and its purpose is supposedly to “strengthen strategic partnerships based on business to business engagements with industry leaders”.
This is not the first unauthorised trip Mayor Meth has decided to take. Her last unauthorised trip amounted to R369 000 which was never recovered nor reimbursed to the Municipality.
Our Municipality cannot afford such an expenditure, especially since R3.8 billion of unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure was unlawfully written off by the municipality last month.
One of our main responsibilities is to expose corruption where it exists and to root it out completely. We cannot be part of depriving residents of OR Tambo Municipality basic services while the ANC further enriches itself and continues to enjoy lavish trips on the taxpayers’ account.
We, therefore, would like to strongly urge the MEC of Cooperate Governance and Traditional Affairs, Fikile Xasa, to step in and stop out municipality from spending R392 000 that it does not have.
This municipality’s main purpose should be to serve its residents, not neglect them.
The DA will continue to fight tirelessly to put the interest of the people first
