The Democratic Alliance strongly condemns an unfounded report by the SABC purporting that a murder and attempted murder incident at the weekend in Klawer in the West Coast is related to a racist dispute between a farmer and a farm worker.

This is not true and we urge the community at large to let justice run its course as we have been assured by the South African Police Service (SAPS) that an urgent investigation is underway to apprehend the perpetrator or perpetrators.

This unfounded and unconfirmed report by the SABC, published yesterday, claims it was a farmer who shot and killed a man and wounded another at Klawer. This unverified report is especially troubling since incidences of violence against members of farming communities do in fact occur on a regular basis in South Africa.

Fearing for his life and that of his family, a 57-year-old Klawer resident has handed himself over to police so that the matter can be resolved.

Incorrect media reports like this fuel racial tensions.

SAPS are maintaining a heavy presence in the area after at least five houses were burnt down during unrest at the weekend.

The agriculture community in Klawer has also spoken strongly out against this issue of criminality and has pleaded for calm.
