President Jacob Zuma has urged all South Africans to refrain from public utterances that promote a negative notion about the country which he believes could jeopardise job creation and economic growth.

Zuma held a meeting with the Black Business Council and labour leaders today aimed at ensuring government works with business to build confidence in the economy.
The president says it is encouraging that government, labour and business are working together saying Team SA is making progress in building confidence in the country and the economy.

He says this is important to ensure South Africa avoids a credit downgrade at the end of the year.

Zuma says all South Africans must actively support this initiative.

“The meeting appeals to all to refrain from public utterances that promote a negative narrative about the country.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, who was part of the meeting, says the real test for the country is whether government can keep to the commitments it has made regarding economic growth.

He says all citizens must actively support the work that is being done to boost confidence.
