An “unapproved” BMW 535i car purchased by former ANC Mookgopong mayor Sarah Monyamane has been returned to its suppliers.

The ANC mayor purchased the luxurious vehicle in January 2015 without consulting or seeking the council’s approval.

The former ANC mayor bought the car at a whopping R790 900. She also promised to pay off the money through a monthly installment of R25 000 for a period of three years.

So, when the DA in LIM 368 Municipality (which comprises Modimolle & Mookgopong) took over power after the municipal election, it found that the ANC mayor’s outstanding debt stood at R175 000.

The car was immediately sent back to the suppliers, requesting the termination of the contract. The Maimane-led party argued that taxpayers’ money shouldn’t be used for self-enrichment or luxury, but must be used for job creation, service delivery, and other fundamental social services.

DA caucus leader Hercules Louw said:

“The people’s money should be spent on job creation and service delivery. Where the DA governs, we ensure that money meant for the people is spent on the people. We will continue to do everything possible to ensure a clean; well-run government that delivers better services and creates jobs.”

This is not the first time the former ANC mayor would be getting a luxurious car for herself at the expense of taxpayers’ fund.

In 2012, Mayor Sarah Monyamane allegedly bought herself a BMW worth R383 553. She also maintained and serviced the car using money from the municipality’s pocket. Not after the car got terribly damaged did she auctioned it in 2014. The municipality afterward, rented several fleets of cars for her before she bought the BMW 535i in 2015

DA-led municipalities have continued to put remarkable cost-cutting measures in place, especially in former ANC-led municipalities. In Tshwane, DA mayor Solly Msimanga has banned the use of luxurious cars, blue-light convoys, among others.

Similarly, in Nelson Mandela Bay, mayor Athol Trollip also prohibited all business and first class domestic air travel for city officials and public representatives in the metro.
