The Congress of the People (Cope) says it will not rest until South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) executive Hlaudi Motsoeneng has paid back the bonus he allegedly received from the broadcaster, calling it illegal.

The party opened a case of fraud and corruption against Motsoeneng, alleging that he unlawfully and improperly disposed of key state assets, such as the SABC archives, to MultiChoice without the authorisation of the SABC board.

It has been widely reported that it was the sale of these archives that earned Motsoeneng a reported R11.4 million bonus.

Motsoeneng was appointed general executive for corporate affairs after the Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed his application for leave to appeal a ruling which found his permanent appointment as SABC chief operating officer was irrational.

Cope’s Dennis Bloem said, “He does not deserve this R11.4 million as a bonus because it was illegal, this whole deal was illegal.”
