The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) managed to blow R181 819 000.00 on advertising in the 2015/16 financial year.
Advertising spend for the year increased by R64 956 000.00, up from R116 863 000.00 in the 2014/15 financial year.
It is evident that despite the tough economic times, and warnings from two finance ministers that government needs to tighten its belt on spending, the GPG’s appetite for expenditure is ever-increasing.
The biggest culprits for this spending splurge were the departments of Education, Economic Development and Agriculture.
|Education||R 14 665 000.000||R 46 367 000.00|
|Economic Development||R 4 969 000.00||R 23 719 000.00|
|Agriculture||R 12 552 000.00||R 3 338 000.00|
Gauteng Finance MEC, Barbara Creecy must account as to why, under her watch, the spend on advertising in Gauteng has risen by 35% in a single year.
This money could have been better spent on projects or actual programmes administered by departments – such as school infrastructure, SMME development, and small scale farming programmes.
The DA will continue to monitor the GPG’s spend on advertising and provide valuable input in committees to ensure that residents of the province get value added services for their money.
