The Democratic Alliance has condemned the Department of Water and Sanitation for the slow progress in eradicating bucket toilets.
According to a report by the Auditor-General, the department only achieved 5.66% of its target for this year. This means that only 1 838 out of 32 500 bucket toilets were done away with.
The DA’s Leon Basson referred to the high number of bucket toilets in South Africa as the “ANC’s assault on human dignity”.
“Indeed, this reveals yet again that the ANC governs like the lives of poor South Africans do not matter,” he said.
“No person deserves to live in such an environment and we will work hard to restore the human dignity the ANC has disgracefully ignored.”
The DA says that one of its top priorities is to eradicate bucket toilets where they govern.
However, no province in South Africa has completely eradicated bucket toilets, including the Western Cape.
