A vehicle crossing railway tracks at the Koelenhof Train Station near Stellenbosch has been smashed by an oncoming train, leaving the driver injured.
An eyewitness said the driver was rushed to hospital, but authorities have yet to advise on any other casualties.
Pictures show the train engulfed in severe fires, and the vehicle, a small truck, severely damaged.
The vehicle belongs to Reliance Compost. Emergency services are on the scene.
Metrorail has issued a notice via Twitter, saying that all Muldersvlei trains will terminate at the Stellenbosch station, and that a bus will shuttle passengers the rest of the way.
