There was a catastrophic fire incident which burnt some parts of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan (NMMU) university, threatening students and the neighbouring community. This led to the massive evacuation of the students to places of safety from the scene of the sudden fire mishap.

“Students were evacuated from the Sanlam Student Village‚ where the fire had got dangerously close‚ and returned when the fire was extinguished‚” said NMMU spokeswoman Zandile Mbabela.

The North‚ South and CSIR campuses were affected.

“Firefighters worked through the night trying to contain the fire. Fortunately nobody was hurt.”

Mbabela said the situation was being monitored for any possible flare-ups.

At the moment, Hinnewssa is gathering the extent of destruction  of the fire incident.
