A Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer is in a stable condition in Milpark Hospital after two officers exchanged gunfire with suspects who were found with cellphones valued at R60 million, metro police said in a statement on Thursday.

Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said that the 28-year-old officer was injured while responding to information of two trucks which were transporting cellphones and had been hijacked on the N3 Buccleugh Interchange, East of Johannesburg, Thursday morning.

“Officers followed a tracker signal to a cemetery at Marlboro off-ramp, Alexandra, where the shooting began.”

Minnaar said that the officer, along with his colleague, managed to arrest two male suspects and recovered approximately R60 million worth of cellphones.

The officer was transported to Milpark Hospital by a South African Police Service helicopter.
