Minister of Communications, Ayanda Dlodlo has apologised for a Tweet about gender violence that was construed by some as being insensitive to the plight of women facing abuse.
It is only a real woman who walks away from an abusive relationship. Women, Let us walk away from abusive relationships. #WomensMonth
I agree that my tweets was phrased incorrectly. I went on to speak about victim empowerment & support.
Speaking to the media, Dlodlo explained that the statement she made in a very specific context and was referring to the courage required when a woman does leave an abusive relationship, and not to women who choose to stay in abusive relationships for whatever reason.
Dlodlo was at pains to explain that she is very aware that many woman stay in abusive relationships because they are in fear of their lives or financially dependent on their partners.
She also disclosed that her mother was in an abusive relationship and she witnessed domestic violence as a child.
