This is the latest investigative drills after years of public outrage and agitation against the Indian-South African family. The Hawks have confirmed that they are probing whether the controversial Gupta family used public funds for a family wedding at Sun City in 2013.
DA MP David Maynier said in a statement that acting Hawks head Lieutenant-General Yolisa Matakata told the standing committee on finance that “a team” was now investigating the charges laid against Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane and Atul, Ajay, and Rajesh Gupta, among others.
“This follows revelations that public funds, meant to assist the poor, were allegedly washed through a complex web of front companies, and used to pay for Vega Gupta and Aakash Jahajgarhia’s wedding at Sun City in 2013,” Maynier said.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi told the press: “We are dealing with a lots of investigations and this must not be construed to a single case. It was direct question from the members of Parliament and our response was an emphatic yes but it talks to a broader investigation.”
