A Ladysmith man has been sentenced to two in prison for beating his and burying it alive in his backyard.
Gerard Anthone,48, pleaded guilty to a charge of animal cruelty in the local magistrate’s court on Monday.
He beat the dog to death in November, 2016, after it killed one of his chickens.
His life partner Suzanna Anthone, was found guilty of assault with intent after she attacked Karoo Animal Protection Society (KAPS) inspectors with a branch when they dug up the dog’s carcass.
She has been sentenced to four years in prison.
KAPS got a court order to allow them to confiscate three other dogs on the property. The dogs were emaciated and covered in ticks and fleas.
Magistrate Marius Nel ordered that the couple were not allowed to keep any animals for five years.
