Some notable South African act have been billed in the glamorous MTV base premier drama series Shuga, along with other great music artiste to grace the sizzling soap.
The yellow carpet was rolled out with Mzansi stars such as Mduduzi Mabaso, Nomalanga Shozi, Mmabatho Montsho, Nomsa Mazwai and Nakhane Toure spotted on it.
Set to premiere on MTV Base on Wednesday, 8 March, the 12-part drama series features some familiar faces including Tshepo Maseko, Clint Brink, S’thandiwe Kgoroge, Winnie Ntshaba and Zenande Mfenyana.
However, it is the fresh-faced talent including Thuso Mbedu, Given Stuurman, Lerato Walaza, Stephanie Sandows and Ayanda Makayi that leave a lasting impression.
Former Muvhango actor and child star Phila Mazibuko makes a promising and convincing acting comeback as sleazy DJ Coalstove.
The electrifying first episode previewed on the night was devastatingly thrilling and brilliant. The show spotlights the coming-of-age journey of various high school teenagers living in Johannesburg.
It tackles teenage pregnancy, socio-economic imbalances, homosexuality, obsessing with blessers, alcohol abuse, HIV and other topical issues currently facing the youth.
The narrative is told in the most honest, educational and entertaining manner; without once feeling dopey, over-dramatized or romanticized. The magnificent acting, sensational writing and masterful directing all peak in sync.
Another storytelling element that makes the show so enjoyable is that it’s exquisitely scored with some great musical picks from some of Africa’s biggest acts at the moment.
