Wits University has replaced a security company following clashes with students, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.

“We have replaced the other security company, but haven’t felt a need to increase personnel as there are less students on the campus,” Shirona Patel said.

A report into the behaviour of security guards who clashed with students on Tuesday was being drawn up and would be handed to management before the end of day.

The two groups threw stones and chunks of concrete at each other outside the Great Hall, on the East Campus. Students were angry after not being allowed access into Senate House, where they wanted to hold a meeting.

On Wednesday afternoon, police foiled students’ attempts to march around Braamfontein. Groups of students left the campus following a meeting, but were stopped and told to turn back because they did not have permission to march.
