A 38-years-old man has reportedly killed himself after he “disagreed with his wife, who advised him to change his drinking habits”, a report says.

Nyasa Times reported that, Lazaro Chitsunda from Malawi was found hanging from a tree.

Police spokesperson Inspector Kingsley Dandaula confirmed the death, adding that the deceased was a “heavy drinker”.

“The man was a heavy drinker and could sell household items including bags of maize, fertilisers and anything that he could offer for cash to buy Kachasu (traditonal beer),” Dandaula was quoted as saying.

In a similar development, a  28-year-old man has died in Manase Township in Blantyre for drinking alcohol on an empty stomach, police have confirmed.

The man has been identified as Petro Mapanga of Kadzuwa village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Bvumbwe in Thyolo district.

Blantyre police Public Relations Officer, Elizabeth Divala said Mapanga died on Wednesday this week.

“He died at around 15:30pm. According to his relative, the deceased was, on this day, seen drinking local beer. Later was seen at his place under a tree but restless,” explained Divala.

Mapanga was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) where he was pronounced dead.
