Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina on Thursday, called for a harsh sentence against anyone arrested in connection with the rape and murder of African National Congress veteran Hermina Mmule Mpakanyane in Benoni Wattville.
“This is a very shocking incident only a person with a twisted mind can commit such a heinous crime against a defenseless and vulnerable person like Gogo Mpakanyane,” said Masina.
Mpakanyane, 86, was raped and murdered on Wednesday.
“Gogo was an activist of the ANC and many comrades used to meet and find shelter at her home during the height of the struggle. She continued being an active member until her death. Instead of appreciating gogo’s role in the struggle for liberation, these thugs decided to brutally murder her,” Masina said.
“We cannot take the law into our own hands yes, people are angry but two wrongs do not make a right and we must have trust in the justice system to handle such incidents and I wish those behind this incident face the full might of the law and get a harsh sentence.”
Masina appealed to the community to protect the elderly because they can benefit from their wisdom, he said Sixteen Days of Activism against the abuse of women and children, must not only be an activity for November month, but rather an everyday thing.
Lieutenant Nomsa Sikele from Benoni police said no arrest have been made.
