Main opposition party the Democratic Alliance has experienced a difficult political year. Ranging from Helen Zille’s tweet, failed motion of no confidence on Pres. Zuma, Mmusi Maimane’s deportation from Zambia, and many other things.

A councillor of the Democratic Alliance party in Mpumalanga was caught shoplifting.

The DA councillor was arrested after he was caught shoplifting at the Usave Shoprite in Sabie on Friday.

The incident happened after the DA councillor and other members of the party gathered to head to Nelspruit for a march to the office of the provincial police commissioner of Mpumalanga.

The plan was for the group to hand over a memorandum to the police commissioner.

For the trip, the DA member decided to get some snacks at the Usave Shoprite in Sabie. This was where the councillor was caught stealing sweets.

Confirming this incident, police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi related that the DA councillor will be making his first court appearance on Tuesday at Sabie Magistrate Court.

Mmusi Maimane, the DA leader also confirmed the report but refused to speak further on it till the matter is properly investigated.

According to Hlathi, the Mpumalanga councillor was released after he was arrested on station bail.

“He is currently out on a R300 bail and his case is being investigated,” said the police spokesperson.
