The Democratic Alliance party reacted to the incident saying: “the DA came out in our numbers, in support of Victor Rethabile Mlotshwa who is the victim of (the) horrific racial attack.
Today, Jane Sithole, the party’s Mpumalanga Chairperson addressed a gathering of DA activists and supporters outside the Middelburg Magistrate Court.
“We are also here to show support for his family during this difficult time. There is no place in a democratic society for bigotry and racism of any form.
This goes against the values and principles protected in our Constitution and against the DA’s core principles of Freedom, Fairness and Opportunity for All.
The fight against bigotry and racism requires all South Africans to unite in condemning the acts of the few people who seek to divide us. We are better together and must continue to work towards building a South Africa that is truly prosperous, and united.
This is ideal that the DA will work tirelessly towards honouring Nelson Mandela’s dream for a non-racist, non-sexist South Africa, that belongs to all who live in it. South Africa belongs to all of us.”
The DA maintained that the humiliation of Mlotshwa can be based on nothing else but his blackness. That, it said, “… it is in actual fact a humiliation of black people as a whole.”
The incident took place at JM De Beer Boerdery next to Komati Power Station. Already, the accused persons are facing charges of kidnapping and assault with intent of grievous bodily harm.
Narrating his ordeal, Mlotshwa related that the men accused him of trespassing on their farm and started beating him up.
“There was a foot path there and I decided to use it. They accused me of trespassing their farm and they started beating me up. The next thing, there was a grave and then a coffin. There was nothing I could do because the other man had a gun.
“They beat me up, tied me and put me into a coffin, I was scared for my life.”
The case was postponed to January 25. The accused, Willem Oosthuizen and Theo Martins Jackson will remain in custody. It was argued that the two can’t be granted bail in the interest of the community.
