Cosatu’s biggest affiliate Nehawu wants President Jacob Zuma to step down with immediate effect.
The National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) wants Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to take over as interim leader until the governing party’s elective conference in 2017.
The union briefed the media at the end of its Central Executive Committee meeting in Johannesburg.
Nehawu General Secretary Bereng Soke said the best way forward is for the ANC leadership to develop a unifying roadmap towards the 54th National Conference.
Soke said Ramaphosa will steer the transition to an overwhelming victory for the ANC in the 2019 national elections.
The trade union believes that this move will go a long way in resolving the governing party’s current challenges.
Nehawu says 2016 will go down in history as a turning point for the ANC after losing three major municipalities and called on the president to “do the right thing”.
