The Department of Social Development has released a statement, saying that MEC Albert Fritz has pledged R198 million to fight the abuse of elderly residents.

According to MEC Alebert Fritz who attended a Christmas party with elderly residents in Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town on Sunday, as part of the department’s oversight visits campaign. The campaign is to raise awareness against elderly abuse and neglect.

Speaking at the event he said that the elderly are seen as soft-targets and that nobody should spend this special time alone ;

“The elderly are seen as soft-targets, and are targeted by crooks and sadly even family members, because they know you can’t physically fight back”.

“Nobody should spend this special time of the year alone [and] as we head into the festive season, I encourage families with older persons in residential facilities to visit more often, or even take them in for the holiday period,” he said.
