The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government has demanded for almost R1.1 billion from South African Presidency.

The province wants to use the money to pay the salaries of its many Headmen (izinduna). KZN has 2,o39 izinduna and each of them wants about R8,000 salary per month.

Not just that, they als want the pay to be backdated to 2006 when the government started proclaiming salaries for them.

KZN Premier Willies Mchunu disclosed that the province will have to find R252 million come the 2017/2018 financial year to remunerate the Headmen.

There are more than 5,000 izinduna in South Africa. Not long ago, President Zuma met with the province to discuss, among other things, the long-standing issue of their remuneration.

President Zuma announced that the nation’s Headmen could receive a R84‚125 flat rate annual salary from government.

It was also agreed that Izinduna should be recognized for the work they do in their traditional communities.

“The meeting also reiterated the need for a legislative review to ensure uniform national standards in the way traditional institutions and their representatives are recognized and supported by the democratically elected government,” the Presidency stated then.
