The eThekwini municipality has been rocked by yet another scandal involving the mayor and allegations of fraudulent or improper official salaries. A woman who was employed personally by Mayor Zandile Gumede is being investigated after it emerged she earned a monthly salary of R50 000, the same as what senior managers in the municipality earn.
Thabisile Ncayiyane was appointed by the mayor in late December of 2016 as her personal domestic worker/personal helper. Sources claim Ncayiyane’s duties included attending to the wants and needs of Gumede.
The investigation into Ncayiyane centres on her bloated salary, which according to her employment contract was on T17 scale. This salary is reserved for senior managers and Ncayiyane simply does not have the required experience or education to qualify for that salary scale.
IOL.co.za reported that a Sunday paper claims to have seen a copy of Ncayiyane’s contract of employment including the T17 salary grade. Despite this claim, the municipality has rubbished the allegation.
