Today, 3 August 2018, DA Member of the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education,Sonja Boshoff MP, and DA Limpopo Provincial Leader, Jacques Smalle MPL, will visit Molautsi Secondary School following reports that 27 girls at the school are pregnant.
The DA leaders will discuss this matter with the principal and see whether there are any planned interventions. The Western Cape Education Department has reduced teenage pregnancies by 25% through several interventions and we believe these should be replicated across the country.
The DA welcomes the Draft National Policy on the Prevention and Management of Learner Pregnancy in Schools, but we believe parts of the policy need to be strengthened to ensure that the rights of pregnant learners are upheld.
This will ensure that female learners can focus on learning and ultimately get the same access to job opportunities as their male counterparts in the future. Learners who have fallen pregnant must also not get left behind. Our children’s future must always be prioritised and the DA will continue to put them first.
