The Democratic Alliance says it intends to report a Tshwane ANC councillor for sexual assault, following an alleged incident immediately prior to a debate on violence against women and children

The party’s Christo van den Heever alleges that the ANC’s Joel Masilela sexually assaulted pregnant DA councillor Jacqui Uys.

Furthermore, he says, the ANC caucus “went to great lengths” to prevent Masilela’s ejection from the sitting once the incident had been reported.

“Councillor Masilela’s past shows his disregard for the rights of women, and has been accused of assaulting two female councillors and sexually assaulting another before today’s incident,” says Van Den Heever. “There is no place for such actions, and as an elected public representative, Councillor Masilela should be an example of exemplary behaviour.”

The DA plans to report the event to the Commission for Gender Equality, reiterating that the rights of women and children are enshrined in the Bill of Rights.
