KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said two men drowned in the sea off Durban on Sunday afternoon.

Netcare 911 paramedics responded shortly  to the scene at Virginia Beach on Airport Road in Beachwood, Durban, Netcare 911 spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe said.

“Upon arrival, Netcare 911 paramedics found one man at the shoreline and the other still missing in the water. Paramedics then began resuscitating the 25-year-old man; this went on for some time. Sadly, there was nothing more that paramedics could do and the man was declared dead at the scene.”

“The body of the other man, 23, washed up on the beach a while later. This man was also declared dead at the scene by Netcare 911 paramedics, Mathe added.

Marshall Security officers who also attended the scene said the two fisherman drowned in a freak accident.

Spokesman Kyle van Reenen said eyewitness reports suggested that the men were fishing off the pier when the younger man was washed out to sea by the rising tide. The second man then dived in in an attempt to save him and drowned too.
