A terrifying accident which took place just after 5 p.m on Sunday has claimed the lives of two children identified as Azizo Geremiah and Ngcwele Mbuso Mlele, both aged 4 while they were playing in their Mdantsane township home.

The anonymous driver who ejected from the truck seconds after he crashed into the playing kids is said to be fighting for his life in Frere Hospital.

The moving vehicle then crashed through a wall before demolishing part of a four-room house where three-month-old Eihile Bottoman was sleeping. Amphiwe Bottoman said she and three other family members were seated in the lounge of their home when they heard a loud noise from outside.

“We all got up and ran. Seconds later, the truck crashed into the lounge and bedroom. I lost my mind. It was only then we had come to terms with what had just happened that I remembered I left baby Elihle sleeping inside the house,” Bottoman said.

The family was so scared but after going through the rubble they found Elihle safe and sound. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for Azizo and Mbuso. Azizo’s grandmother Kholeka Geremiah was one of the first family members to arrive at the scene.

Two other children that were also playing with the deceased were identified as Ogiyonke Geremiah, 5, and Ayazingca Bottoman, 4, were admitted into the hospital with minor injuries although Ogiyonke has since been discharged but Ayazingca is still under observation due to a cut he sustained on his head.

The truck has been taken for inspection at the police yard in West Bank. It was understood that this is not the first truck incident this year, in may a water truck destroyed two RDP houses in unit P. The vehicle rolled down the hill with the driver still inside.
