Cape Town police have arrested three of their own in the war on drugs.
The first arrest happened on Wednesday‚ when a 34-year-old officer at Parow police station was arrested at his home on charges of corruption‚ dealing in drugs‚ possession of drugs and possession of stolen property.
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said on Saturday that the officer had appeared in Bellville Magistrate’s Court. The case was remanded until September 30 and the officer was released on R5‚000 bail.
A 40-year-old officer from Strand police station was arrested at his home on Thursday‚ and the third arrest happened on Friday at Macassar police station‚ when a 50-year-old was taken into custody.
“The second and third suspects will appear at Somerset West Magistrate’s Court on Monday‚” said Van Wyk.
“As part of the current project‚ two males were also arrested for dealing in drugs and appeared in the Bellville and Strand magistrate’s courts. More arrests of SAPS members are imminent.
Van Wyk said police bosses had vowed to root out criminals in the ranks. “We trust that these arrests will send a strong message to other would-be criminals within the SAPS‚” he said.
