South African Police Service (SAPS) has revealed that a 34 year-old Police Constable working at Van Rooyen Port of Entry in Wepener, and his 40 year-old accomplice from Lesotho were arrested after they were busted trading evil money.
They were arrested after Hawks swiftly acted on information about the Police Constable and his accomplice approaching SARS official to negotiate a bribe for the release of some goods worth R134, 000.
The goods were confiscated by SARS due to non compliance.
With the information Hawks received, a waylay investigation was initiated to intercept the R30 000 bribe transaction. That, led to the arrest of the suspects at the scene.
The duo are now facing charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice. They are expected to appear before the Wepener Magistrates Court on Monday, 6 February 2017.
