Massive destruction and injuries necessitated the emergency declaration in the area and urgent alert. Residents and other motorist must be aware of the danger posed in this area. Knysna was declared a disaster area on Thursday.
More than 8,000 people were evacuated from the town as firefighters battled to contain wildfires on Wednesday and Thursday.
Hundreds of homes had been razed by a runaway fire.
On Thursday evening the mayor said the fires were being contained.
“Currently we are containing the fires, which means they’re not controlled but we are containing them,” said mayor Eleanore Bouw_SApies.
We don’t want to create unnecessary expectations because we do still have a few areas [where] we are still having challenges with fires. And those priority areas are currently receiving all our attention.”
Additional firefighters and SANDF troops were sent to the area.
