The Eastern Cape police is conducting an investigation over the body of a 10-year-old  girl that was found in the Mnyameni River outside Dutywa on Monday afternoon.

The little girl who was identified as Siziphiwe Mbizo. She is from Qeqe location in Bolotwa Village near Dutywa.

Eastern cape Police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said that she was last seen on Friday night by her mother.

Her mother, 28, left her in the house with her grandmother and went out. When her grandmother woke up, she discovered that the child was  nowhere to be found. She went straight and reported it to the Dutywa police station.

“The K9 search and rescue unit from Mthatha helped search the area on Monday leading to the discovery of her body at about 3 p.m on monday.

At this stage it is not clear whether the girl was sexually assaulted but police are investigating‚” Manatha said.

Jackson Manatha confirmed the child had no visible injuries.

A post mortem would reveal the cause of death.
