SAPS has revealed that the Police in Giyani arrested a 26-year-old man for the attack and killing of a Police Officer.
Specifying that the incident happened at about 03:00 on Tuesday. SAPS divulged that an unknown number of suspects entered local shop at Makhuvha Village outside Giyani and robbed the owners of an amount of cash and groceries at gunpoint.
The police was notified about the robbery. They reacted swiftly but on arrival, they found that the suspects have fled the scene.
Immediately, the crime fighters initiated a follow up chase. Soon, they found a suspicious looking vehicle along the road leading to Phalaborwa. When they intercepted the vehicle, a shootout ensued. In the process, one of the police officer was fatally wounded.
Also, the police shot and wounded one of the suspects who is currently under police guard in hospital.
“It is also believed that one or more suspects might have been wounded during the shooting. A manhunt has been launched for the possible wounded suspect(s) who abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
The police recovered the following:
Two firearms One vehicle;
A Toyota Quantum Three
Three cell phones.
Soon, the arrested suspect will be dragged to Giyani Magistrate’s Court. There, he will face charges of Murder and Armed robbery.
Commenting, SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba frowned at killing of the police officer. General Ledwaba sent condolences to the bereaved family and vowed that the police wouldn’t rest until all the outstanding perpetrators are punished.
