Four children were killed and five people injured in a head-on collision near Kuruman in the Northern Cape, on Sunday, paramedics said.

A bakkie and a car collided on the N14, about 20km from the town, ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

The victims were found strewn across the scene. It was believed that they were in the bakkie. The four children, aged between four and eight, died on the scene.

The five injured included two boys, aged between one and two.

Local authorities were investigating the cause of the accident.
